I have been
running for 25 years in Europe and in the US, and
in order to keep running, I saw physical
therapists, trainers/coaches, orthopedists,
acupuncturists, homeopaths and doctors from
different parts of the world. Rarely good
experiences.
As a therapist, Jim is a great combination of knowledge, method, experience, and holistic view. He is also a person of great humanity and compassion.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet him and I'm happy to have him on my side in my challenge to be competitive again, in my age category.
Thanks, Jim!

It has been 6
weeks since I had my evaluation with you. As you
may recall I am a 56 year old marathon runner who
had flexibility/range of motion limitations,
particularly with respect to my left leg. I have
been religious with my stretching - once before I
workout; once after I workout; and once at night.
At your recommendation I also reduced my running
to 4 days a week (with no speed work or racing)
and I added cross-training. I am very pleased to
report that after 6 weeks I have experienced
substantial improvement in my flexibility/range
of motion, and the range of motion on my left
side is approximately 95% of my right side. Two
of my running friends have commented (on an
unsolicited basis) how good my stride/form looks,
and I feel my hips turn and the ease of my
stride. At this point I intend to defer speed
work and racing for 2 more weeks in an effort to
get my left side closer to my right side. One
question, I have had two sports massages (deep
tissue), and both times the massages have been
very painful. Should I be complimenting my
stretching with massages, and should the massages
be painful? Thanks very much.

“Wharton
Performance is a day-by-day, week-by-week, slow
and steady MIRACLE. Life-giving and
life-sustaining as well as a remarkably
insightful, Jim Wharton and his extraordinary
staff offer the most effective cure for injuries
I have ever found in my transit through
conventional therapy and treatment. This is a
rare gem of a physical therapy haven. None of the
gimmicks and nonsense of the usual routine,
cookie cutter therapies. At Wharton the
therapists are so highly trained and so finely
attuned to each patient that the great progress
I’ve made should not seem such a magical mystery.
Nonetheless it does. I LOVE you guys!!!”

The Whartons
have made me stronger and faster and gotten me to
the finish line at my last three marathons. I ran
my first marathon in 1993. After having three
sons, I started to train again but kept getting
injured. I got so frustrated by the constant pain
that I thought I would have to give up running. I
looked into Wharton Performance at the suggestion
of a friend and began regular visits. I was able
to run the NYC Marathon in 2005 completely
pain-free. Encouraged, I then worked with Tommy
Nohilly to see if I could improve on just
finishing. With the stretching, strengthening,
training and encouragement that I got from the
Wharton Team, I was able to finish the NYC
Marathon the following year, fast enough to
qualify for Boston. I am now looking at
completing two marathons this year and wouldn’t
think of doing it without my weekly visits to
Wharton.

After years of
unsuccessful physical therapy for chronic ITB
issues, I started treatment at Wharton
Performance. Before long, I was able to PR in a
half marathon - thanks to an amazing therapist,
Jimmy Lynch. Jimmy has outstanding diagnostic
skills, addresses underlying issues and provides
excellent overall treatment. Jimmy really
understands the body and just knows how to make
you feel better. I was so defeated by my injury
but Jimmy's positive attitude and non quitting
spirit pulled me through mentally and physically.
He is extremely thorough, attentive and sincerely
cares about his clients. In fact, the entire
Wharton staff make you feel like you are part of
the family. Whenever Jim Wharton is in the
office, he makes sure to stop by and check on
your progress. I used to dread going to PT but
going to the clinic is a pleasure. They are all
top notch professionals with a great personal
touch.

"Without the
help from Jim Wharton at the Wharton Performance
Center, I doubt I would be playing tennis today.
I suffered from a leg injury and a year later
from a shoulder injury. Jim provided me with a
structured strength training program, which I
follow today 6 months after my injuries. It was
not necessary to have surgery and a long post
operative recuperation period. Many thanks for
your encouragement and training.

"In the past I
had hired aggressive personal trainers and I came
out of every session a beaten puppy. After a few
weeks I became very stiff and began having blood
circulation issues, my cardiologist at Columbia
Presbyterian sent me to the Wharton Performance
Clinic. You see, I have a very serious physical
impairment, and its called being 70 years old.
After a few sessions this work became the only
medicine I know".

" I came to see
you for some chronic knee pain I was having under
my right knee. We did some stretching and
strengthening which has helped tremendously. I am
still not 100% yet but very close to it and back
to 70 mpw with no pain and only mild stiffness.
Thanks for everything. Your first 2 hours was
better than 40 I spent in physical therapy.

"After three
marathons in the past year, culminating in the
Beijing Olympic Games, I was ready for a good
break. Subsequently, after two weeks of not
running I was in much need of some therapy. I
spent a week with Tom Nohilly at the Wharton
Performance Center going through their unique
flexibility and strengthening techniques. I am
now feeling ready for the hard training for my
next marathon. Their method is simple, yet
brilliant. Isolating the specific muscles used
for my sport that are in much need of
strengthening. I am confident that if I apply the
techniques I have learned it will greatly
increase the longevity of my career. I feel
blessed to have the Wharton's and everyone at the
clinic as friends."

"At every place
I have coached, the Wharton's stretching and
strengthening program has been a big part of the
teams' successes. Now in my third year at
Harvard, the program is flourishing in large part
because our athletes are staying healthy and able
to train at a higher level. The stretching
routine is simple, straightforward and effective.
It enables each one of our athletes to implement
their stretching routine without the use of any
fancy equipment or expensive personal trainers.
All you need is your rope. Everyone on my team
knows that if you don't show up for practice with
your rope, you might as well not show up. It
would be like showing up without your running
shoes as they are equally essential. Tom Nohilly
did a clinic with our sports medicine department
and our strength and conditioning staff and now
all of Harvard athletics incorporates some aspect
of Wharton Performance. Our cross country team is
still in the rebuilding phase, but we are all
committed to competing at the national level and
the Wharton's program is a key ingredient in that
process. They truly are the team behind our
dream."

The best thing
that's happened to me during my running career
was being able to be treated By Jim and Phil
Wharton. Their stretching therapy has helped me
recover faster from injuries and from my
stressful training. With their therapy I am able
to train better due to increases in my level of
flexibility and strength. I have captured 2 World
Record's in marathons (2h05:42/2h05:38) while in
the care of Jim and Phil Wharton. This is a
stretching technique that I will never stop
receiving during my career.

"Jim Wharton is
special. He understands all the important aspects
of musculoskeletal pathology. As a physician, I
can comfortably say he knows human anatomy better
than most orthopedic surgeons. By way of example,
Jim not only has an understanding of the
insertion and attachment ligaments, tendons and
connective tissues, he also understands how
multiple tissue layers are aligned and oriented
about the inner skeletal support system.
I have been going to see Jim for over a year. Perhaps the best testament to his skill and expertise is that I need him far less than I did one year ago and have developed the needed skills to not only maintain a healthy physical condition but also improve my musculoskeletal health. Above and beyond his level of competence are his demeanor and the way he interacts with with his patients and friends alike."
